Workshop Description

Open Studio Project offers a glimpse into their mindful approach to artmaking in this collage and decoupage workshop. Participants will use these techniques to revitalize boxes, bottles, and other found objects with upcycled paper materials. Objects will be provided, but participants are invited to bring their own special object to re-imagine!

It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes that are not precious as the workshop will utilize glue and Modge Podge.

Meet Your Facilitators

Maira Egan is Open Studio Project’s Lead Art Therapist. After learning about OSP in her undergraduate art therapy classes at SAIC, she has continuously referred to the OSP process in her artistic practice and everyday life. In her studio practice as a painter and ceramicist, Maira creates modular artwork exploring community and connection. This directly influences her work at OSP, guiding her to work from a humanistic perspective that is both culturally aware and trauma-informed. Through OSP, Maira explores the experiences of working with diverse populations, specializing in adaptive art directives for any and all artists.

Emma Zbiral-Teller received her BA from Hampshire College with a focus in experimental film and is a recent graduate from Adler University with a Masters Degree in Counseling and Art Therapy. Her in-depth experiences working with youth in public school systems has offered her insight into the strengths and needs of the communities she serves. She utilizes that knowledge to support youth, families and communities directly where they’re at by using person-centered approaches that create encouraging, honest, trauma-informed and culturally-aware spaces to foster creative thinking, cognitive growth, mindfulness, social emotional learning and kinesthetic and sensory processing. She enjoys entomology, plant care, animals and dystopian sci-fi narratives.

Rob Lentz is Open Studio Project’s Executive Director and occasional workshop facilitator. An artist, educator, and curator, Rob has an extensive background in community art studios, exhibits, and non-profit management. He is a founder and former Executive Director of Project Onward in Chicago. He has managed supportive studio environments for 25 years, leading teams of teaching artists, administrators, as well as art therapists and students. Rob has written, lectured, and curated extensively about the disability arts movement and the creative arts’ capacity for healing. Rob serves on the Board of Directors of Intuit: the Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art.

Art After Work is funded in part by the Alphawood Foundation, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, Illinois Arts Council Agency, and individual donations from Intuit members and supporters.
