Doug and Carol’s collection explores a thread in American art which considers the influence of non-academic art on the American psyche. Their collection mirrors pieces from colonial portraiture, formally known as limner art of the 19th century, as well as includes artwork from the outsider art genre. Together they pose great inquiry of the shared influence and similar techniques of self-taught artmaking including portraiture and wood carving.
