Haitian artist George Valris integrates his country’s unique and varied traditions in his creative process. For instance, although Valris does not practice Vodou—a religious practice native to Haiti—he originally made decorations from old military uniforms to adorn Vodou churches. Today, Valris constructs his intricately designed flags, wallets and purses with needle and thread and gives them flair with decorative sequins and beads. The results are stunning works of art that embody Haiti’s vibrant and multifaceted history and culture.
