Art Design Chicago Now: Joseph Yoakum’s Atlas

Artists and scholars from Intuit and Roger Brown Study Collection joined Art Design Chicago to explore artist Joseph Yoakum’s “Atlas,” beginning in Chicago, where he is still revered; his early impact on artists and presence in their collections; his impact on successive generations of artists, including artists working today; and new “windows” into his life and work. Panelists included scholar Lisa Stone, Roger Brown Study Collection collection manager James Connolly, contemporary artist Tim Nickodemus, and Intuit board member and Yoakum enthusiast Cleo Wilson.

Chicago Calling Amsterdam: A Conversation Between Directors

Chicago called, Amsterdam answered. The 2018 hit exhibition Chicago Calling: Art Against the Flow finishes the last leg of its European tour at the Outsider Art Museum (OAM) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. OAM Director Hans Looijen joined Intuit President and CEO Deb Kerr to share his impressions of Chicago Calling and take viewers behind the institution’s closed doors to show the installation. The two directors addressed the complexity of the genre’s terminology and discussed why and how the Outsider Art Museum chose its name.

Artist Talk: Arkee Chaney

Intuit was thrilled to host ceramicist, cartoonist and painter Arkee Chaney in celebration of his recent release from prison in June 2020, as part of the remarkable work of the Illinois Prison Project, which secured the commutation of Chaney’s life sentence. Chaney’s work provides commentary on African American experiences, politics and racism. In his talk, Chaney shares his background, his artistic practice and his hopes for the future.

George Widener is an internationally recognized and celebrated contemporary self-taught artist, who creates multimedia artworks with ink and paint on found paper materials. In his talk, Widener shares his background, his artistic practice and his fascination with time. Throughout the evening, he discusses his mechanical approach to art-making using his vast knowledge of dates and calendars to create works of art with numerical patterns.
