Opening reception: Saturday, May 20, 2023, 2–4 p.m.

This exhibition showcases works of art by the students in the classrooms of Intuit’s 2022–2023 Teacher Fellowship Program. The Teacher Fellows who participate in the program enable students to experiment with their creativity through the ethos that art can be made by anyone. Students experience the power of expression in a safe space, encouraged to explore their creative potential. Further, art teachers collaborate with colleagues in different subjects (math, speech, science and literature) to build lesson plans that help students integrate the characteristics of outsider and self-taught art into cross-disciplinary learning.

Students transformed found and non-traditional materials into artworks that reflect their personal visions and connect with their lived experiences. Young artists in Teacher Fellows’ classrooms were introduced to and inspired by artists Sereno Williams, Mr. Imagination, Charles Williams, David Philpot, Shandrewick Key, Roman Villarreal, Aldobrando Piacenza and Lee Godie, among others.

Every year, this award-winning teacher professional development program reaches hundreds of students across Chicago. The 11 teachers and 8 schools in this year’s program came together from many neighborhoods and across the Chicago Public Schools network: Acero Charter School – Victoria Soto High School, Roald Amundsen High School, Mariano Azuela Elementary School, Ludwig Van Beethoven Elementary School, Jordan Community Elementary School, Sabin Dual Language Magnet School and William Howard Taft High School, plus non-CPS school Austin Special Chicago.
