2016 VISIONARY AWARD RECIPIENT
The night's top honor will go to Intuit founder and renowned gallerist Judy Saslow. Saslow will receive the 2016 Visionary Award for her advocacy of outsider art and global outsider artists. Owner of the Judy Saslow Gallery, Saslow featured many European outsider and self-taught artists during its 20 years, before closing in 2015. The ball will commemorate her contributions to outsider art and celebrate her success in the art world.
2016 TRENDSETTER AWARD RECIPIENT
Cara Zimmerman, associate vice president and specialist in American Furniture and Decorative Arts at Christie's, will receive the 2016 Trendsetter Award. Zimmerman was instrumental in the sale of William Edmondson's Boxer, setting a world auction record for a piece of outsider art. Zimmerman previously worked for the Philadelphia Museum of Art where she coordinated the critically acclaimed exhibition "Great and Mighty Things": Outsider Art from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz Collection.
2016 ILLINOIS ADVOCATE OF THE ARTS AWARD RECIPIENTS
Janet Carl Smith and Mel Smith
Janet Carl Smith and Mel Smith will receive the 2016 Advocate of the Arts Award for their advocacy of and philanthropy to visual and performing arts in the Chicago community. A former university administrator and investment consultant, Mel has chaired the boards of Free Street Programs and Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, and currently serves as a member of the 3Arts board. As former Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Janet built support for the arts over 32 years managing free public programs and exhibitions, promoting the city's cultural resources and supporting the development of local artists and arts organizations. She is a longtime board member of Arts Alliance Illinois and advises the Terra Foundation of American Art on Art Design Chicago planned for 2018.
