_________________________________________________________ James Yood, Professor of Art Theory and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, facilitates three panel discussions examining the multi-dimensional perspectives surrounding the cultural climate of Chicago and the city’s history. Panelists to be announced. Saturday, September 16, 4 pm, The History. Discussion will place the unique history of Chicago in the epicenter of the outsider and self-taught art movement. Panelists include Michael Bonesteel and Russell Bowman. A reception with the panelists follows at 6 pm. Location: Intuit, 756 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago Saturday, October 14, 1:30 pm, The Collector. This panel will examine the role of Chicago collectors and artists in the development of the cultural landscape and outsider art in the 60s through the 80s. Panelists include Phyllis Bramson, Mike Noland and Ruth Horwich. Location: Chicago Cultural Center, First Floor Garland Room, 78 East Washington, Chicago. Saturday, November 4, 4 pm, The Curator. This panel will examine how curators embraced and promoted the work of outsider artists in the context of Chicago's galleries and museums. Panelists include Ken Burkhart, John Cain and Gregory Knight. Location to be announced.
Intuit's 15th Anniversary Symposia was made possible by a generous grant from the Terra Foundation for American Art which is dedicated to fostering exploration, understanding, and enjoyment of the visual arts of the United States for national and international audiences. __________________________________________________________ Celebrate Intuit's 15th Anniversary this fall. Join us for our benefit gala and a special tribute to Phyllis Kind. Phyllis has been the "Grande Dame" of the field and was one of the first art dealers to provide a framework for the promotion of the Outsider and Intuitive Art. Intuit owes much to her impeccable vision and leadership. The celebration will take place on Saturday, October 7 at Zhou B. Tickets available at the Chicago Botanic Garden, by calling 1-866-500-FAIR or by visiting www.countryliving.com. ______________________________________________________________________ Cosmic Consciousness: The Works of Robert Bannister August 25 through October 15, 2006 at the Krannert Art Museum An incredible and rarely seen work from Intuit's permanent collection will be featured in this exhibit. Robert Bannister Born in 1911, this outsider artist--a native of Urbana--spent his early years convalescing in a local sanitarium. Later stricken with anemia, in 1950, he left the home of foster grandparents to enter the Champaign County Nursing Home, where an occupational therapist introduced him to carving and drawing. After his release in 1961, he lived in one room near West Side Park, painting, drawing, and writing works that are meditations on human life tinged with humor and a self-proclaimed "cosmic consciousness." Guest curator: Glen Davies August 24, 5:00-7:00 p.m. “Boundaries of Identity: An Artists' Dialogue” Friday, October 27, 6:00-8:00 pm Intuit - David Philpot, Bernard Williams "Boundaries of Identity: An Artists Dialogue" is part of Chicago Artists Month, the eleventh annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant visual art community. In October, 250 exhibitions of emerging and established artists, openings, demonstrations, tours, open studios and neighborhood art walks take place at galleries, cultural centers and arts buildings throughout the city.
