2018 IntuiTeens Summer Internship Program
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
June 26-August 2, 2018
Teen interns with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art will learn about outsider and self-taught art and use the museum’s collection as a catalyst to design and implement a teen art-making program presented in Chicago Public Library Teen Services YOUmedia branches and arts events throughout Chicago. Intuit’s teen interns will be provided guidance and mentorship in arts teaching, museum education and museum administration. After two weeks of intensive training sessions the teens will represent Intuit as community outreach presenters, leading workshops for teens who want to tap into their desire to express themselves and learn to make objects that are fun, beautiful and functional. NO PREVIOUS ART OR CRAFT EXPERIENCE NEEDED. That’s what is cool about Outsider Art: making something for your own enjoyment and your own expression.
In DIY style, using found and re-used materials, we’ll learn how to make art out of all kinds of recycled and upcycled materials. We’ll make digital copies of the cool stuff you make and post it online. We’ll talk about what we make together. If you’ve got them, bring us stories about the kinds of things that are made for beauty and usefulness in your family’s culture.
This internship is suitable for teens who want to explore opportunities in community arts teaching and nonprofit arts organizations. Teens think outside of the box in order to present current issues that affect teen culture. All the while, teen interns will learn basic art-making skills that would broaden their range to create. Additionally, by doing work as community outreach presenters, interns will experience some public speaking and gain confidence from peer to peer training.
This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
