Exploring the Immigrant Experience in Outsider Art

Thursday, November 15, 2007, 6pm

A panel discussion on the immigrant experience of outsider artists will take place at Intuit on Thursday, November 15 at 6:00 pm. Panelists include Victor Espinosa, independent scholar Randall Morris, and School of the Art Institute Professor of Art and Cultural Anthropology Marilyn Houlberg. Given the interests and specialty of the invited speakers, topics will include the definition and use of the term “immigrant” in the field of outsider art, the role of forced migration and the African-American experience and how that relates to the immigrant experience, and the commonalities and differences all these artists share with each other.

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art promotes public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of intuitive and outsider art through education,
exhibition, collecting and publishing.  Intuit defines ‘intuitive and outsider art’ as the work of artists who demonstrate little influence from the mainstream art world,
and who instead are motivated by their unique personal vision. This definition includes art brut, non-traditional folk art, self-taught art, and visionary art.
