Recovering Western Tattooing: Text, Image, Specimen

September 12, 2009

Free and open to the public

Anna Friedman Herlihy, co-curator of Freaks & Flash, will present a talk on the history of tattooing in the West from the 1500s through 1900s. From shipwrecked sailors to fur traders to religious pilgrims, this talk will reveal that Western tattooing has a longer and more complex history than is commonly believed. Anna is an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Art History, Liberal Arts, and Visual and Critical Studies and teaches classes on the history and culture of body art and material culture. She will also be available after the talk to answer any questions about artworks in the exhibit.
